About the Trail
• Name Meaning: In the local dialect, Guiting-Guiting translates to "jagged" or "saw-tooth", describing its sharp, serrated ridge formation. • The "Galápagos of Asia": Sibuyan Island is famous for its extreme biodiversity endemism, comparative isolation, and rich flora and fauna. • Geology: It is an ultramafic massif made up of ancient oceanic crust (ophiolitic rocks like peridotite and serpentinite) pushed up by tectonic forces. Climbing & Difficulty • Difficulty Rating: 9 out of 9 (Extremely Technical). It is widely considered one of the hardest and most dangerous mountains to climb in the Philippines. • Notable Obstacles: • The Knife's Edge: A notoriously narrow, razor-sharp rock ridge with steep drops on both sides. • Kiss the Wall & 90-Degree Wall: Vertical rock faces that require intense hands-and-feet scrambling without ropes or harnesses. • Peak of Deception: A false summit that tests hikers' mental and physical endurance Trails: The two main routes are the Tampayan Trail (from the north) and the Olango Trail (from the south), typically done as a 2- to 3-day traverse.
